Congratulations Swimmers!

Great meet yesterday! We had about 70% of our team, roughly 117 of our 167 swimmers, so good showing! Keep in mind Newton is a HUGE team, they brought over 190 swimmers and that was not their full team – hard to believe! We had a number of swimmers who swam their first meet yesterday. We are very proud of you, the meets can be a bit overwhelming for young swimmers and even if they just swam one event, that was a huge accomplishment! The team had 78 best time swims and 30 swims that were within under one second of a best time for a total of 51% best or near best times – AWESOME JOB! The links below will lead you to the team website and the full results.

Thank you once again to ALL parents who volunteered to help run a very SMOOTH meet. We can not do it without you and want you to know that each and everyone of you is an important part of our team!

There is NO meet next weekend, which means we have TWO practices – yeah! More time to work on skills and endurance – the coaching staff loves that! Please note schedules for workouts, the week of MLK holiday we do offer two additional practice opportunities for everyone.

See you at the pool!

Coach Kim

Tip of the Day

Something I will try to have in every email is one tip for our swimmers. Today’s tip focuses on good sportsmanship.
After you complete a race, it is a good practice to STAY IN the water until ALL swimmers in your race have touched the wall. An added good sportsmanship tip is to tell the swimmer(s) in the lane next to you “Good Race”: or “Nice Job”.

Thank you to all who supported the Jake N Joe’s Fundraiser Thursday night. We appreciate your participation and know this program will continue to grow.

Many of you have asked for the balance of the swim schedule. I need to confirm a couple of dates with Dedham and Westwood for the balance of the season, but have dates for you through the balance of the month and the first week of December listed below. I will have the remainder of the season firmed up prior to the end of this coming week along with the electronic version of the parent handbook.

We have had a large number of fins being left or misplaced. PLEASE WRITE YOUR CHILD’S NAME ON THE FINS. This helps us if they are left behind. I will have extra SHARPIE MARKERS at the check-in table today. If your fins are not marked, please take care of it this weekend.

Further, if you have lost a pair – there are two binds on the far side of the pool. There is a chance that your child’s fins are in one of those binds. Please take a look, if they are marked with WST – they do not belong to our program. Just keep that in mind.

I have received some very disconcerting news after last Saturday’s workout and I wanted to address this with ALL families. One of our swimmers left his Maroon DS next to his swim bag and cloths during his workout time (12:30 – 1PM) in the bleachers and when he was done with workout the DS was no longer where he left it. We know mistakes happen and if you happen to have a DS floating around the house that you realize is not your families if you can kindly return it to one of the coaches or the reception desk we would greatly appreciate it.

I am a bit bothered because we have a great program with wonderful families, and this coupled with the fact that our team is the only team accessing the facility during these specific practice times. I am trying to be mindful that we all make mistakes and it is mistakes like this that we learn from and help mold us into a better individual. This is obviously a lesson learned for the swimmer who had his DS taken, and unfortunately a costly one at that. More importantly I think it is a teachable moment for all of us. So please have a talk with you swimmers about appropriate and not-appropriate behavior and what if means to be a good teammate.

Please remind your children that if they must bring their electronics to swim, to give it to mom and dad while they are in the pool and if that is not possible, they should likely just leave them at home. Unfortunately, leaving things like this out of your swim bag is sometimes too much of a temptation for others.

This incident coupled with the lock on the locker incident in the boy’s locker room has me a bit concerned. Parents, if we can all be a bit more vigilant in keeping an eye on our children I think these types of actions could potentially be avoided. This type of behavior will NOT be tolerated in our program. We are not being good teammates when this type of thing occurs.

JAKE n Joe’s Fundraiser Tonight

We are asking all families current, summer only and past alumni to consider supporting our upcoming fundraising night at Jake N Joes’ tonight Wednesday, 11/9 from 5 – Close. This applies to all dine-in and take-out. Our program will receive 20% of the total sales from everyone bringing in a coupon! We CANNOT solicit guests already there, BUT we can forward this coupon to family and friends and ask them to participate.

We will be having these once a month this season, so if you can’t make this one work, there will be other opportunities. Any and all participation would be much appreciated!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – CORI FORMS DUE NO LATER THAN NOV. 10 – TOMORROW!

New this season, all volunteers are required to have a CORI check through the Norwood Aquatics Club, even if you have a CORI through another agency.

Some of you have filled out the required paperwork (if not please print, the “CHAPTER 6, 172H CORI REQUEST FORM”, page 5, from the attachment below, extra copies will be available at practice). Also required, is a copy of your license or passport.

Happy Halloween!

Well, we have two workouts under our belt and all things considering, it went very well. Thank you all for your patience over the next month with swimmers in larger collective groups. We will get there and you WILL see your children make AMAZING progress.

Thank you to all our older swimmers that worked very hard during their first weekend as Coaches Helpers. You all did a wonderful job and it will get easier and you will learn more as we progress through the season. Please be on high alert next week and do a GREAT JOB being IN the WATER for Coaches Andrew and Colleen!

After the workout schedule I have a few housekeeping items, please scroll down and read….

Tuesday Workouts at the Vanderbilt are ONLY for our more experienced swimmers who are placed in the Gold II, Pre-Junior, Junior and Senior Groups (Practice Session 3 on the weekends). In the interest in trying to keep these workouts relatively less chaotic, please see the breakdown of groups below. After reading all of the below, if you still MUST bring your child to the opposite workout of what they are supposed to swim in, you may do so, but please bring it to our attention via email. We realize many of you have CCD, Honors Band etc and will not be able to join us, and that is okay. If at some point you can, please do so. I apologize for the confusion on this one.

Tuesday Workout Group Breakdown

3:15 – 4:10 workout – Senior and Junior Swimmers Only

4:10 – 5:00 workout – Pre-Junior and Gold II Only

Vanderbilt Club Requests – please share with your swimmers…

We are guests at this facility like any other, but people who workout here are members, so PLEASE do NOT overrun locker rooms. Please bring your swim bags onto the deck and leave them at the far side by the hot tub – there is a bit of room down where we begin workout at the other end too.

Yes, I said hot tub. This is NOT open for our swimmers to wade in.

Please keep it down to a whisper in the locker rooms. Again, think of those around you.

Door holding and extra polite behavior get you additional brownie points in everyone’s book.

There is parking in the lot, and also on the street next to the club. Some days area bit tight, so please be patient.

Mom’s and Dad’s – there is limited seating in the front lobby and there is some seating on deck. Because of close proximity to Norwood, many drop and run and errand and come back. You are welcome to sit and watch practice if that is what is most convenient.

Our time at Vanderbilt last year went very, very well and I would like to have this relationship stay on the up and up. Those who are new to the routine, just be aware.

Workout schedule Week of October 30

3:15 – 4:10 SR/JR/Pre-Junior/Gold II – Coach Colleen Cormier

Sat., 11/5 Blue Hills – Sarah Wilson Lifeguarding

12 – 12:30 Little Ray – Practice Time 1 – Coach Colleen Cormier

                                        Blue/Gold – Practice Time I – Coach Andrew Patterson

Sun., 11/6 NO WORKOUT

Tuesday, 11/8 NO WORKOUT

Housekeeping Items

Remember parents, workouts are watched from the bleachers. I know it is tempting to come down and interact with your children, but please allow the coaching staff to work with them. If they need equipment e.g. goggles and fins, make it fast but please do not linger. If they are driving you nuts because they are not listening, look the other way J. We know those that are not and will connect with them and reinforce skills.

Locker rooms – Please make sure you turn-off showers when you are done. I turned off at least three in the girls locker room the other day. I know if you can turn them on, you can turn them off too! J

We had an incident with a lock being put on a locker yesterday that did not belong. Boys (and girls) if you find a lock, that is opened or unopened, just leave it. However tempting it is, we do NOT want to lock up our teammates personal belongings – that is not a nice thing to do. In this case we were able to get it off, but it might not turn out as nicely next time.

Lost items – please see below. If you have these items, please turn them into the reception desk on Sataurday.

Blue/Yellow Fins with the name “Sarah Eppolito” on them. These are brand new and we think were picked up between the 2nd and 3rd practice session on Sunday by accident. Check your fins at home if you have Blue/Yellow fin size.

Red/White/Blue Striped Towel with the name “Connor Fitz” embroidered at the top end of the towel. This was picked up by accident on Saturday.

In general all lost and found is kept at the office behind the bleachers in the pool area down by the ladies locker room side of the top of the bleachers. If you have lost something typically that is where it is. Fins are normally placed in the binds that are on the far side of the deck. Many of these belong to Walpole Swim Team, but occasionally our swimmers fins end up there if they are left.

We will see you all soon and I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!

We are starting practices this weekend and I wanted to give you all an overview of what to expect and what you need to do/accomplish while your child is in the water. I have broken up topics below – please make sure you take a look at each area so you are well informed. We will have parent handbooks electronically within a week and printed versions will come out once the final practice schedule is pinned down. In the meantime, there is a lot of detail below so please read on…

Please remember that parent seating is in the stands. You are more than welcome to watch workout, but we ask that you do not go onto the pool deck. There are locker room facilities at Blue Hills; they are specific to gender so keep that in mind. We always try to encourage the buddy system with our swimmers when they are in the locker room. If you use the showers, please make sure you turn them OFF ALL THE WAY when you are done. Remember to police your area for your personal things and any garbage in the stands and locker room before you leave.

Group Assignments

I have tentatively placed swimmers in groups and training sessions based on the registration I have received. I have also included those who have indicated their children are swimming, but just need to get me the paperwork and payments. This document is attached for your review. There is a key at the top of each page telling you what times each practice session. If I have missed anyone, or I failed to place your child in the appropriate practice time (requests or sibling swim times don’t match [other than Gold II – SR], please give me a gentle reminder and I will make the adjustment.

Further, I have moved some swimmers into new groups if they have been with the program for a while and I felt they were ready to make a jump. The most impacted are those swimmers who were in Gold I that I might have moved to Gold II. There is a difference in the practice times, so please make note and if there are any issues or concerns let me know. Also, there is a new group for the winter, Pre-Junior. We developed this group so that coach to swimmer ratio is lower given we have four coaches on deck the final hour of all weekend practice times beginning in December.

Workouts the First Four weeks

Please understand that during the first four weeks there might be some moving around that we do of the swimmers based on what we see in the water. Once we get through the November weekend workouts, I will send out a revised listing of where everyone falls. If you have any questions on where your child has been placed, please let me know.

Also, coaches will be moving around a bit the month of November. We have two coaches involved in High School Swimming still and they will fill-in as they are able to for Coach Kim Miller and Christine Chang.

Listed below are the workout times for the first four weeks. If the times/dates are NOT listed, we will NOT have workout. We will be fully staffed the first weekend of December for the balance of the season.

Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to run your registrations by my house or dropped them in the mail. Keep ‘em coming! My goal for everyone is to have all registration in by Monday, October 24! Not to promote procrastination, but if you miss this date, I will of course still take your swimmer’s registration, but truly I need to get these in so I can divide up training groups.

Another deadline that is sneaking up on all of us is the apparel orders. NAC team apparel makes great holiday gifts! These are due no later than Wednesday, October 26 (ONE WEEK FROM TODAY)! I have pulled this out of the full registration packet for those of you just looking for that part of the long document.

NHS Swim Team Updates

In an effort to better keep our swimming community informed of how our high school swimmers are doing, you will find some recent swim team updates. I will try to include these in all Splash Notes forthcoming. Great job swimmers, you all are doing AWESOME!

Tuesday, 10/18 V. Framingham

A tough meet against Framingham (100 – 81) but still one with some highlights and heroics (swimmers and divers subbing in last minute for sick/injured teammates). Alex Metta, Will Higgins, Emily Khillarah, Jimmy Conley, Kyle MaClaughlin, Manny Escobar, Patricia Lee (with a new team record in 100 backstroke) and Natalie Looney all had best times and/or first place finishes. Kudos to swimmers who had to sub in. For example, Captain Megan Clifford was unable to swim last minute due to an injury when she fell right before the meet. Freshmen Natalie Looney and Manny Escobar both swam events in her place and both came out of water with personal best times! That is only one example of this team’s unity and one of the main reasons for our success this season.

Friday, 10/14 V Braintree

Amid sore shoulders and tired bodies, the Mustangs were able to keep a much improved Braintree High team at bay with their depth and versatility. When some of our top scorers were unable to compete is some of their events, others stepped up and got the points needed for the 101 – 85 victory. This is the toughest part of the season and with powerhouses Framingham and Walpole coming up the Mustangs may find them short handed. So now is the time for others to keeping stepping up. Thus far this season that is exactly what has happened. When the team found themselves ahead by only a mere 4 points mid way through the meet, Marguerite Lee, Megan Clifford, Charlotte Rivard, Anthony Rodgriguez, Katherine Osborne and Bailey Lambert are among many that swam different events at the last minute against Braintree because that is what the team needed. Norwood was able to pull ahead and secure the win with solid performances in the last four events of the meet. Shannon Wilson dove officially for the first time this season and earned points for the team. Will Higgins and Emily Killarah came away from the meet with best times in their 100 freestyle events.

Tuesday, 10/11 V Weymouth

Norwood 106; Weymouth 66. Weymouth High is a relatively small team so the Mustangs were able to shake things up a bit and swim different events, still achieving their 7th win of the season. The NHS swimmers swam to a 1 -2 -3 sweep in all but two events. Evelyn Metta swam a personal best in the 200 yards free for the win. Other personal bests were accomplished by Meaghan Shaughnessy, Katherine Osborne, and Eddie Hernon. A highlight of the meet was Patricia Lee’s school record in the 100 yards backstroke. She just nipped Alexandra Metta’s record by .06 of a second. One reason this team is so successful this year is because there are so many great rivalries on the team and these swimmers just constantly push each other. Chances are that particular record may be lowered again as three swimmers (Megan Clifford too) have been within tenths of it.

Congratulations to High School Sectional/State Qualifiers to Date

Our largest contingent ever…Anthony Rodriguez, Ev and Alex Metta, Will Higgins, Megan Clifford, Patricia Lee, Marguerite Lee, Eddie Hernon, Jimmy Conley, Kristen Folan (diving), and Charlotte Rivard have all qualified for sectionals and/or states.

Congratulations to Swimmers Breaking NHS Swim Team Records this Season

Jimmy Conley – Men’s 200 Free, 2:06.53

Anthony Rodriguez – Men’s 200 IM, 2:35.35

Kristen Folan – Women’s Diving 1M, 198.3

Anthony Rodriguez – Men’s 100 Fly, 1:10.15

Patricia Lee – Women’s 100 Free, 58.06

Will Higgins – Men’s 100 Free, 58.69

Jimmy Conley – Men’s 500 Free, 5:47.04

Patricia Lee – Women’s 100 Back, 1:07.23

Eddie Hernon – Men’s 100 Breast, 1:17.02

4 x 100 Free Relay (P. Lee, A. Rodriguez, E. Metta, A. Metta), 3:59.41

Winter Swim Team Registration

Wednesday, September 21 – Monday, October 24, 2011

Winter team registration is continuing through Monday, October 24. Please get your registration in soon. We truly need to see where we are numbers wise for all training groups so we can make any necessary adjustments.

If you miss the swimsuit orders, you can still order a generic royal blue one online through K&B. We are ordering a few additional silicon caps and will also have latex caps.

Apparel orders need to be in no later than Wednesday, October 26. All items are wonderful holiday gifts and will be in prior to the holidays. Please do not delay on getting your orders turned in!

New this year we are selling winter parkas. These are “Norwood” generic meaning you can use them for any sport – they are not specific to just swim. We must have 12 committed orders to place this order with K&B. If we do not have 12, we will still be able to order generic parkas and get embroidery done on our own. The price for these is $75 versus $99. I have samples of these at my house as well if you would like to come over and try one on. I must know commitments for parkas ASAP – I’d like to get this order placed by next Friday so we can get them in prior to our first meet and the holidays. If you are interested, please email me at norwoodstingrays@gmail.com .

Finally, registration packets are on my doorstep. So if you are having printer issues or problems opening the attached, please stop by and pick one up. My address is 96 Maple Street.
